Resort Tour: Port Orleans French Quarter

Writer's picture: Theresa Theresa

Hello everyone! Today's post is all about Port Orleans French Quarter, which is where my mom and I stayed during our trip to Walt Disney World in early March!

This is one of the few Disney resorts I have never stayed at before! I have to start this off by saying that I loved staying here. This is such a beautiful resort area. It's just big enough but doesn't feel massive and it's very walkable. It's themed to look like the streets of New Orleans and it truly does. This resort really does feel like you've stepped into a neighborhood in New Orleans. Without further ado, let's get to the resort tour!

The lobby is super bright and airy right when you walk in. In the lobby you'll find the check in counters, restrooms, an entrance to the general store–Jackson Square Gifts and Desires, an entrance to the quick service restaurant–Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory, and Scat Cat's Club.

Jackson Square is just like any other store you'd find in a Disney resort hotel. They've got merchandise galore and essentials for your trip like shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, etc.

Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory is the main dinging area for the resort. The menu features an array of Louisiana inspired meals, but also includes some classic staples like pizza and burgers. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and are a great place to stop into if you you're looking for breakfast before the parks or a late dinner after you've gotten back from a day of exploring. However, the most popular item on this menu by far are the Mickey shaped beignets. They are SO delicious!

If you walk straight through the lobby you'll be greeted by a sweet little courtyard with outdoor seating for Sassagoula Floatworks. There are also exterior entrances for both Sassagoula and Jackson Square Gifts. This small area is really cute, and has a direct sightline to the pool where you can find these fun statues of musical alligators! They're a great opportunity for a photo op!

The pool area of French Quarter is a nice size and features a pool side quick service called Mardi Grogs which features a view of the pool but also of Sassagoula River off in the distance. The menu here features a full variety of alcoholic beverages as well as a small variety of food. My personal favorite pool side drink is the lava smoothie. They have this at (I believe) every Disney resort pool bar. It's raspberry puree with pineapple and coconut. Basically it's a non-alcoholic pina colada with raspberry and it's delicious!

If you walk around to the back side of the pool there's a boat dock where you can catch a boat to either Riverside (the other resort in Port Orleans) or Disney Springs. We took the boat to Disney Springs and it was a really nice ride. It was kind of long, but super relaxing, I'd say it probably took about fifteen minutes. However, you get a nice view of the tree houses at Fort Wilderness and some of Saratoga Springs, and when you're approaching Disney Springs you can get a great overall view of the area.

The view from our room was really nice as well. At this resort you don't get a balcony attached to your room, but the walkways to get to your room are outdoors, so you can look over the rail and have a nice view of whatever is below. For us it was a small area of grass meant to look like a secluded park. It was really love walking outside and seeing that every morning! We were lucky to be in building 2, because where our room was meant we were very close to the lobby and to the pool. It was a great location!

Here's a look at what the inside of our room looked like. I really liked this room! It was spacious enough for the two of us and had under bed storage for our suitcases. There was a large tv, and the bathroom was a decent size. I would have to say one of the only downsides to this room was the water pressure in the shower. I know hotels in general do not have great water pressure, especially in Disney, but this may have been the worst I've ever experienced at Disney. That being said, we may have just had a funky shower, so maybe it was better in some of the other rooms! Another downside, which I do not have a photo of, is the elevator in our building. I'm not sure if all the other elevators look like this one, but the only way I can describe it is skeezy. It had this weird odor and really harsh florescent lights. It was not themed in the slightest and made me feel like we were at some kind of sketchy motel. Needless to say we took the stairs most of the time we stayed here!

So, my final thoughts on this resort are.... I LOVED staying here. I loved the theming and I thought our room was really great. It feels like a medium sized resort and is very walkable, and if you do decide to explore the resort it really does feel like you're walking around New Orleans. The streets are so cute and the horse drawn carriages you catch glimpses of every once in a while only add to the aesthetic. I would highly recommend staying here! This is a moderate resort, but the theming really makes it feel like it could be a deluxe. It's beautiful and honestly I don't know why we never stayed here sooner! This is a great resort!
